I sent this same note to Mission Mission.
I was wondering if you guys know anything about the DeLano’s on 23rd and South Van Ness supposedly closing. I noticed they were missing produce on Monday, and I asked one of the employees if they were remodeling. He said they were actually supposed to CLOSE THE STORE that day, but it got postponed.
I want that DeLano’s to stay open!!! It’s convenient and it’s not a Whole Foods. I even like that it’s not a Safeway because it’s not crowded ever, and the employees that work there are really nice. Can you guys look into this or something? One of the checkers told me to contact DeLano’s and try to tell them to keep it open.
Maybe I’m the only one in the world that wants it to stay open, but if SF continues to become Suburbia I’m moving.

How would I track down what was on the 200 block of Fair Oaks?

You are right in the middle of the old Pioneer Race Course.
Thank you so much! It’s just such an interesting house. It survived the ’06 quake, there is a picture of it in a book called San Francisco Then and Now. Other than that we couldn’t find anything else. When I saw your map of the Pioneer Track I decided to start digging a little more and try and find a history of the place.
I know the D6 election covers the all of Deco Ghetto, MiSoPo, some of the Mastro, Hipster Valencia and El Tonayense Flats.

Have you seen http://www.historypin.com? It’s a website (& mobile apps) that allow for placing historical images in place. With the mobile app, you can overlay the image on a live camera image. It’s a lot like the Museum of London StreetMuseum App, but allows for user-supplied content.

I thought you guys might be interested in this new Mission event.
I came across a band (Huntinanny) playing from their van on Friday nights across the street from the Delirium bar.
They use a small generator to power their amps and lights and the drummer plays INSIDE the van. I have seen them every Friday night and they played for Critical Mass last night – pretty sweet.

Heya Man! Have you ever seen the Walter Matthau classic, “The Laughing Policeman” from 1973?
I just watched it, and, aside from being a decent 70s crime thriller, the opening scenes are Relevant To Your Interests(tm). Opens up at the Transbay Terminal, with characters getting on board a 14 Mission bus (The bus is a Mack, incidentally. I had no idea they even ever made buses!), complete with interior ads for Bruno’s. Then, following Hollywood’s usual re-imagination of locations, the bus is shown heading North on Mission st at Army. I had no idea that there was a Doggie Diner there!
Next scene shows the bus heading East on 26th at Mission, stopping at the bus stop that is, in reality, for the 27. From the angle you can see the glow of the old Tip-Top Lounge sign (though it isn’t anything close to legible from the acute angle), with an “Auto-Torium” auto parts store in the space currently occupied by Casa Guadalupe. Interestingly, across Mission St, Samiramis Imports is already there, although at that time it was right on the corner, even has the same three-piece sign that it has today.
At that point the 14 Mission is next shown going down a steep hill in Chinatown, crossing Grant st. So, yeah, a creative interpretation of the route.

Hi. You’re good at digging up awesome pics of old SF, so I was hoping you could help me out. There were two awesome play structures in Noe Valley in the 80’s and my googling found no pictures of them.
One was at Douglas Playground and was this cool metal UFO that was suspended off the ground by two ladders. The other was at Noe Valley Courts and Playground and was this gigantic pyramid maze thing made out of clear plastic bubbles. There’s got to be pictures of these awesome old play structures and others like the old Coyote Point playground, the old Zoo, and Children’s Playground in GGP.

I just wanted to send you a heads-up letting you know that the Bay Area’s fantastically weird and cool icons, the Doggie Diner heads, are in jeopardy.
To many living in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Doggie Diner heads are a much-loved relic of our living history, a local treasure. In fact, I would argue that the landmarks of the Bay Area vary greatly depending on whether you’re a resident or a visitor. To residents, the landmarks that stand out as ours are the quirkier, more eccentric aspects of SF, and the Doggie Diner Heads are San Francisco culture through and through.
These funny pups are leftover signage from the Doggie Diner, a long defunct local restaurant chain in the SF Bay Area which was quite popular from the 1950s to the ‘80s. After the chain’s let closing, three of these gigantic grinning dachshunds were rescued from being tossed into the dump by artist John Law. And since then, he has been bringing these weird, local icons to charity events, parades, and art happenings for the last 20 years FOR FREE and for the sheer joy of it.
But the heads have been traveling for decades, and if they are in desperate need of repair if they are to continue to be shared with the citizens of the Bay Area and beyond. To restore them to their former glory, this week we launched a Kickstarter. Our Kickstarter page has info telling the history of the Doggie Diner, and also explaining why we need to repair the mascots.

I’m wondering about a thing that seems like a thing you might have already wondered about and might possibly have hunted down and sorted out. I’ve been looking at some 1938 aerial photos of Presidio Heights and some of the streets are blindingly white. I’m looking specifically at Lyon between Washington and Jackson, but there are many other blocks, some even with white stripes down the middle.
Any thoughts, or any knowledge?
