Thursday, November 6: Mission Loc@l Launch Party
Mission Loc@l (www.missionlocal.org) is a brand new website dedicated to news in the Mission District. Articles are written by U.C. Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism students. We’re celebrating the launch of our new site by hosting a happy hour at Cava 22. Come meet us!
Cava 22 (3239 22nd Street at Bartlett)
Thursday, November 6
5:00 PM- 8:00 PM
Please attend the first ever Shitty Kitty meetup! We’ll be sure to make you your very own shitty kitty doing whatever you want it to be doing with a burrito. No sweat.
Hmm, I didn’t see an e-mail anywhere on here, but I was wondering if I might be able to use a couple of images that you took for this site in a documentary about Mission Street Food that I’m producing? It’s nearly finished, but I’d like to use a couple stills from the early days of the taco truck and Anthony from MSF recommended a couple that you have on this blog.
Would you mind e-mailing me as soon as you have a chance? We’re hoping to get this piece out very soon and we’d appreciate the help! Thanks so much.
I’m writing to ask if I can use one of your photos for a flyer encouraging neighbors to leave their lights on and discourage crime. I can give you a pitiful payment out of my own pocket..the pic is of Bernal, long exposure.
No, it’s not for Bernal. It’s the Excelsior. I’m trying to make the place safe and comfy to visit or live in. so, can you help me out?
I just have to out myself — longtime lurker, but once again have found myself falling down the rabbit hole of your wonderful blog. As a tour guide in the city, I am deeply impressed with your obsessive (in a good way) approach to local history research. And you always make me miss living in the Mission. (Noe Valley is yawnsville.)
I love Burrito Justice too, and would like to buy you a drink! I live on Tiffany Ave and really appreciate learning the history about our neighborhood.
I was wondering if you guys know anything about the DeLano’s on 23rd and South Van Ness supposedly closing. I noticed they were missing produce on Monday, and I asked one of the employees if they were remodeling. He said they were actually supposed to CLOSE THE STORE that day, but it got postponed.
I want that DeLano’s to stay open!!! It’s convenient and it’s not a Whole Foods. I even like that it’s not a Safeway because it’s not crowded ever, and the employees that work there are really nice. Can you guys look into this or something? One of the checkers told me to contact DeLano’s and try to tell them to keep it open.
Maybe I’m the only one in the world that wants it to stay open, but if SF continues to become Suburbia I’m moving.
Might you or any of your burrito minded ilk be down with the Lamb Takedown? I’m looking for 20 contestants, and can give each of them 15lbs of bacon to work with. The event is Aug 8 at Thirsty Bear! Please spread the word!
The article makes reference to Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh … and his living in Noe Valley. I was wondering if it is the same place mentioned by my neighbor who has been on Fair Oaks st for 40+ years. My neighbor mentioned an Ashram on Fair Oaks st at 24th.
How would I track down what was on the 200 block of Fair Oaks?
Just heard the following on NPR. It made me think of Burrito Justice – different neighborhood but similar sense of history. http://99percentinvisible.org/
Wondering if you have any information on 1106-08 Shotwell. We’re in the process of getting CA. Historical Designation. We’ve been told our home and 3 others in the area is called and Eastlake/Stick style. Just wondering if you have any links for me to do some research or if you have any history on this home.
Thanks,
Thank you so much! It’s just such an interesting house. It survived the ’06 quake, there is a picture of it in a book called San Francisco Then and Now. Other than that we couldn’t find anything else. When I saw your map of the Pioneer Track I decided to start digging a little more and try and find a history of the place.
Hello! I was wondering if you could contact me regarding a possible interview with Curbed SF. If you could contact me via email when you get the chance that’d be great. Thanks.
I know people that live in the old Sears building tower (yes, the tower) and they regularly host well attended house concerts by great talent. There is one tonight actually, but they do it pretty often. Email if you need more info.
Chris from MSF/Plebiscite/McSweeney’s here. We’re working on a project with Anthony/MSF that we’d love your help with. Could you drop me a line when you get a second?
I’m told your name is Johnny O. I’ve been trying to find a way to email you directly, as I am working on a CAD 3D model of San Francisco from the 1852-3 US Coast Survey. It’s a part of putting together some short architecture videos in a series I’ve been doing the last couple of years on SF Architecture topics.
I’m having trouble finding pics taken right after the 1989 quake of Mission area damage that I remember from roaming the Mission, but without a camera (stupid).
The 3D model also includes the northern 1/2 of Bernal Heights but not La Lengua. I does include the Precita Creek area however.
Just a short note to let you know that CALIBER (in your blog roll) has been shut down and four of the brotographers from that venture have started a new San Francisco-based photoblog called ALL CITY. http://allcitysf.com/
In fact, our launch day featured a photograph of something you might enjoy – the Mission’s graffiti-adorned Caledonia Street at night.
Love and hugs and all that other manly stuff,
Bob :)
I’ve been wondering about the invisible street that cuts diagonally through the Mission from 22nd and Harrison to approximately 27th and Dolores. You can see it on google maps: http://bit.ly/kTn8iS
Just came across this project to crowdsource / algorithmically determine SF neighborhood boundaries: http://hood.theory.org .. seemed like it may be of some interest, especially considering a certain omission in the drop-down options.

Another long time lurker here: love your site and the digressions into SF history.
Have you seen http://www.historypin.com? It’s a website (& mobile apps) that allow for placing historical images in place. With the mobile app, you can overlay the image on a live camera image. It’s a lot like the Museum of London StreetMuseum App, but allows for user-supplied content.
In a similar vein to History Pin, but more SF-focused, there’s now oldsf.org. It’s the SFPL’s digital photograph collections, but geocoded on a map. Lots of fun stuff, e.g. Dolores Park as a refugee camp (http://bit.ly/rbJxl2) or the second Cliff House (http://bit.ly/r29Dlh).
Johnnyo
I have a client who really likes your SF Islands Map. They want to use it for the basis of a wall graphic in their downtown office. We’d like to modify the graphic a little to make it work for the space. Do you have any licensing info that would allow them to use the graphic as not-for-profit, onetime use artwork? Or will a simple credit note on the wall work for you?
Upcoming Sewer Biek Tour 9/17/11. If you’d like more information, you can call me at 415-602-4094 or Greg Braswell 415-6094781 greg.braswell@sfdpw.org. Thanks! We’d love your input
I thought you might possibly have an interest in a recent survey of a few geotagging projects (such as Historypin, OldSF, and WhatWasThere) being used to make historic images of San Francisco searchable in a map-based format, as well as a few of the issues related to such projects:
hey johnnyo
my friend and i built a website called SkyChalk.com where people can post messages tied to any location – we’re getting some great messages around the city… you should check it out.
In case you might happen to have an interest, I’ve briefly discussed your campaign for La Lengua on the most recent post of my blog, “Using San Francisco History,” entitled “Changing Place Names to Change Historical Memory.”
Love looking at every pixel of those amazing pictures. As I’m in the Army stationed away from My love, My Home San Francisco. You make me feel the heart I lift in San Francisco. much love
I thought you guys might be interested in this new Mission event.
I came across a band (Huntinanny) playing from their van on Friday nights across the street from the Delirium bar.
They use a small generator to power their amps and lights and the drummer plays INSIDE the van. I have seen them every Friday night and they played for Critical Mass last night – pretty sweet.
Hello,
Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I found this shot of the Venus transit of the Sun including Sutro Tower on stellar.io/interesting and thought you’d like it if you haven’t already seen it.
I wanted to do a post on your San Francisco Archipelago posters and I was wondering if I could embed the image on with the story. Naturally, I’d credit and link back to both your blog post and the Zazzle page where you’re selling the posters. Hoping to do the post tomorrow AM, so if you could get back to me as soon as possible that would be much appreciated.
Hi There,
We discovered your blog and loved your detailed descriptions about SF. Because your hyper-local focus on San Francisco fits our community and we think we fit yours, we invite you to take a few moments to try our new, soon to be launched free app, PlaceGuides. Let me know if you are interested, and I will set up a demo for you.
Hi, I just came across your blog today (via Uptown Almanac) and I’ve enjoyed very much your history of SF and your love for maps. I’ve haven’t scrolled through all your entries but just in case you haven’t known/posted this series of maps, I thought you might find this link interesting.
did you hear about this years sewer bicycle tour?
Miles’s website has some information: http://milesepstein.com/news.html
Wed night presentation and Sat tour and sewer party
Hey I love the Islands of SF poster and actually own it from Zazzle, but what I really want is a wrapped canvas version. It should be super easy for you to create on Zazzle with the image you’ve already uploaded. Do you mind doing that? You’ll have this sale for sure, and hopefully many more.
Hey, Burrito, the name’s Chris Field, and sometime in 2013 I plan to put out a role playing game supplement about San Francisco, circa 2107. I’d love to license your Islands of SF image for the book’s interior map- it conveys a ton of info about how the city is laid out without overwhelming the reader and would work well for what I’ve got in mind. Drop me a line at chrisfieldotherverse@hotmail.com.
Hey JohnnyO! I’m looking early pictures of my house at 21st between Treat and folsom. At some point it got stucco’d over and and I want to know what it used to looks like. Has it always been this ugly?
I know you have mad-sleuthing skills. I was very impressed with what you found with clooney’s. and me? I have just had no luck. I checked old SF and history pin. Any other good places to research?
thanks!

I thought you might be interested in a profile we wrote on homeless kids living in the Haight.
Since they are a fixture of the city that most people know nothing about, we decided to write about who they are, how they get by, and their connection to the hippy movement and homelessness in America.
Heya Man! Have you ever seen the Walter Matthau classic, “The Laughing Policeman” from 1973?
I just watched it, and, aside from being a decent 70s crime thriller, the opening scenes are Relevant To Your Interests(tm). Opens up at the Transbay Terminal, with characters getting on board a 14 Mission bus (The bus is a Mack, incidentally. I had no idea they even ever made buses!), complete with interior ads for Bruno’s. Then, following Hollywood’s usual re-imagination of locations, the bus is shown heading North on Mission st at Army. I had no idea that there was a Doggie Diner there!
Next scene shows the bus heading East on 26th at Mission, stopping at the bus stop that is, in reality, for the 27. From the angle you can see the glow of the old Tip-Top Lounge sign (though it isn’t anything close to legible from the acute angle), with an “Auto-Torium” auto parts store in the space currently occupied by Casa Guadalupe. Interestingly, across Mission St, Samiramis Imports is already there, although at that time it was right on the corner, even has the same three-piece sign that it has today.
At that point the 14 Mission is next shown going down a steep hill in Chinatown, crossing Grant st. So, yeah, a creative interpretation of the route.
(I just e-mailed this, along with some screen shots, to the only address I have for you, but dunno if it’s still good or not.)
I saw your images of the Pioneer and Union Race Courses in the Mission District. I am trying to find out more about those courses. Do you know of anymore sites where I can get more information. I am writing a historical adventure fiction novel based during that timeframe.
Supervisor Campos’ office would love to get in touch with you about the new infrastructure and street improvement projects currently being designed for La Lengua.
Hi. You’re good at digging up awesome pics of old SF, so I was hoping you could help me out. There were two awesome play structures in Noe Valley in the 80’s and my googling found no pictures of them.
One was at Douglas Playground and was this cool metal UFO that was suspended off the ground by two ladders. The other was at Noe Valley Courts and Playground and was this gigantic pyramid maze thing made out of clear plastic bubbles. There’s got to be pictures of these awesome old play structures and others like the old Coyote Point playground, the old Zoo, and Children’s Playground in GGP.
Hello!
I just wanted to send you a heads-up letting you know that the Bay Area’s fantastically weird and cool icons, the Doggie Diner heads, are in jeopardy.
To many living in the San Francisco Bay Area, the Doggie Diner heads are a much-loved relic of our living history, a local treasure. In fact, I would argue that the landmarks of the Bay Area vary greatly depending on whether you’re a resident or a visitor. To residents, the landmarks that stand out as ours are the quirkier, more eccentric aspects of SF, and the Doggie Diner Heads are San Francisco culture through and through.
These funny pups are leftover signage from the Doggie Diner, a long defunct local restaurant chain in the SF Bay Area which was quite popular from the 1950s to the ‘80s. After the chain’s let closing, three of these gigantic grinning dachshunds were rescued from being tossed into the dump by artist John Law. And since then, he has been bringing these weird, local icons to charity events, parades, and art happenings for the last 20 years FOR FREE and for the sheer joy of it.
But the heads have been traveling for decades, and if they are in desperate need of repair if they are to continue to be shared with the citizens of the Bay Area and beyond. To restore them to their former glory, this week we launched a Kickstarter. Our Kickstarter page has info telling the history of the Doggie Diner, and also explaining why we need to repair the mascots.
If you want to learn more, including interesting anecdotes etc, don’t hesitate to contact me!
I’m wondering about a thing that seems like a thing you might have already wondered about and might possibly have hunted down and sorted out. I’ve been looking at some 1938 aerial photos of Presidio Heights and some of the streets are blindingly white. I’m looking specifically at Lyon between Washington and Jackson, but there are many other blocks, some even with white stripes down the middle.
Any thoughts, or any knowledge?
Hello John,
Nomaders.com connects travelers with locals for authentic experiences and allows locals to promote what they are passionate about and love most about their city. You are one of the kings of local knowledge, so I thought I’d see if you have time to chat this week?

Just wanted to share in case anyone was interested.
Beginning this summer the Federal Government will release excess engravings once used to reproduce U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic and geologic maps and
other scientific illustrations.
I’m interviewing San Franciscans who are feeling the effects of the rapid change so I can present their stories with data and reporting that creates context for what’s happening right now in San Francisco.
My theory: we’ve reached a tipping point in terms of sustainability. Economically, we’re powering ahead, but socially and culturally, San Francisco hasn’t been this fragmented in a long time.
If you think this project would be relevant or interesting to your readers, please let me know. I’m trying to raise $50,000 by September 2, but if we make the stretch goal of $60K, we’ll have enough for a premiere in a San Francisco theater. If you have any questions about me or GOLDEN CITY, please let me know.
Have you seen this one? A friend posted this on FB earlier. A photographer got some shots of SF from the top of the Bay Bridge in 1971. Before our beloved Sutro Tower even existed.
Okay, lame. Thought it was a whole album or something. NO! Just one super-awesome photo. And a bunch of others that are cool but not as cool as the one I mentioned.
would it be possible to shut down comments on the Dolores lagoon article? As well as cleaning out all the spam attacks that have been growing weekly for months now on that really good page!
We’re loving Burrito Justice! But, then, we are a hyper-local S.F. business.
We would like to offer you a free Swapbox gift card to use for anything you need. We are a San Francisco startup that makes an electronic locker, a “Swapbox”, for receiving deliveries of online orders or for shipping stuff. It’s like an automated post office. We have 21 Swapboxes around San Francisco (including 2 in the Mission!). We are probably one of the largest franchises in San Francisco… we just fly under the radar. You can check us out at http://www.swapbox.com . If you would like a gift card, please just let me know where to send it. It is good for anything you want to ship within the U.S. (Your item doesn’t even need to be packaged; we take care of that, too…. for free.) If you like our service, we would love to give you a few more gift cards to give away to your readers as you see fit.

Hi Mr. Justice, I was riding in the SF Bike Party last night and my friend Kevin Flaherty suggested I get in touch with you; he thinks I should be a guest on your radio show some time. I’m primarily a musician but I also happen to know quite a bit of SF history. Let me know what you think.
Hiii Unable to DM on Twitter or would try there.
You recently retweeted this guy Commander Snake or whatever and you don’t want to do that. You want very much to not amplify that dude.
Or so I hope.
The story you retweeted is interesting hagiography for a genuinely interesting if f—d up German killer of commies.
Colorful tale indeed well researched yes whiffy of fashy sympathies oh yes
Then look at that guy’s history—American X entered the chat.
Full on martial recruiter for right wing extremism. Stay the efff away please and please do not amplify their recruitment streams.
Think we met at Bikes To Books tour last w/e. Wished I’d purchased two of the posters. Stopped by Green Apple today and they said they haven’t stocked in a few years. Any way I can get my hands on a couple?
Hello! Your ‘SWALES’ tweet is one of my favorite tweets ever. It encapsulates their delight so simply. They are visually stunning, they reduce flooding, and they are novel – a couple people in your tweet seem to have learned about them recently, and many more have been stalwartly passionate about them for years. Thank you for such an elegant and effective tweet. Would love to be in touch to discuss more about swales if you’re interested.

Hey,
I just saw something interesting in an article about Noe Valley

Have you seen http://www.historypin.com? It’s a website (& mobile apps) that allow for placing historical images in place. With the mobile app, you can overlay the image on a live camera image. It’s a lot like the Museum of London StreetMuseum App, but allows for user-supplied content.
Here’s La Lengua pre-1920: http://www.historypin.com/photos/#/geo:37.752713,-122.420455/zoom:16/date_from:1840-01-01/date_to:1920-12-31/
Keep up the great work,
Bruce
Thanks! Yeah, started noodling around with History Pin, I need to get stuff uploaded!

This. Is. Awesome.
We need to talk about the Sanborn maps.

Feel free to contact me at jj_beard@gensler.com.
Thanks!

JohnnyO
In case you might happen to have an interest, I’ve briefly discussed your campaign for La Lengua on the most recent post of my blog, “Using San Francisco History,” entitled “Changing Place Names to Change Historical Memory.”
thought you would enjoy these…inside the machine!
Hi, Burrito Justice! I’d like to get in touch with you. Love your blog!
Love looking at every pixel of those amazing pictures. As I’m in the Army stationed away from My love, My Home San Francisco. You make me feel the heart I lift in San Francisco. much love
Glad to be a portal for you!
We’ll be thinking of you Ramez. Hope you get home soon!

Hey there,
I thought you guys might be interested in this new Mission event.
I came across a band (Huntinanny) playing from their van on Friday nights across the street from the Delirium bar.
They use a small generator to power their amps and lights and the drummer plays INSIDE the van. I have seen them every Friday night and they played for Critical Mass last night – pretty sweet.
Here’s their facebook thing: http://www.facebook.com/huntinanny
Though I barely know SF or its environ, I had fun making this fantasy transit map based on the past and future ideas I’ve read here and elsewhere.
http://www.gatewaystreets.org/2010/san-francisco-fantasy-map/
Hello,
Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I found this shot of the Venus transit of the Sun including Sutro Tower on stellar.io/interesting and thought you’d like it if you haven’t already seen it.
Thanks
Hi,
I wanted to do a post on your San Francisco Archipelago posters and I was wondering if I could embed the image on with the story. Naturally, I’d credit and link back to both your blog post and the Zazzle page where you’re selling the posters. Hoping to do the post tomorrow AM, so if you could get back to me as soon as possible that would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Johnny O, This is not really La Lengua-related, but it’s map-geek-related and I strongly suspect that you will appreciate it.

Hi There,
We discovered your blog and loved your detailed descriptions about SF. Because your hyper-local focus on San Francisco fits our community and we think we fit yours, we invite you to take a few moments to try our new, soon to be launched free app, PlaceGuides. Let me know if you are interested, and I will set up a demo for you.
Thanks

Hi, I just came across your blog today (via Uptown Almanac) and I’ve enjoyed very much your history of SF and your love for maps. I’ve haven’t scrolled through all your entries but just in case you haven’t known/posted this series of maps, I thought you might find this link interesting.

Ooh, thanks — I did know about the presentation, but didn’t know when. Will try to write up something tomorrow AM.
If it’s Justice you want, maybe your readership would like to check out this film screening on Nov 28th — http://itsagirlsf.eventbrite.com.
BTW Zazzle
disregard ‘BTW Zazzle’
Good idea — let me look into it.
Thanks – let me know if we are a go
Try this: http://www.zazzle.com/islands_of_sf_2x2_stretched_canvas-192048624814235407
Awesome! Bought it. And the stars lined up today as Zazzle was having a black friday sale too. Many thanks.

Can the Dead save the Mission?
Any other good places to research?
thanks!

Hi Burrito Justice!
I thought you might be interested in a profile we wrote on homeless kids living in the Haight.
Since they are a fixture of the city that most people know nothing about, we decided to write about who they are, how they get by, and their connection to the hippy movement and homelessness in America.

Hey JohnnyO,
Is there anything in the works to get a high-res image of the Cyrillic script San Francisco map? Or anyone that might be printing it?
Thanks!
Nate
?? That’s a pretty high rez version. Did you click on it?
Thanks! Took me a minute to figure out the email. :)
Have you seen this map of San Francisco with proposed freeways? I don’t remember seeing it on your blog: http://a-proposed-world.tumblr.com/post/43716646050/1948sftrafficways
Yes! But thank you.
Hello!
I saw your images of the Pioneer and Union Race Courses in the Mission District. I am trying to find out more about those courses. Do you know of anymore sites where I can get more information. I am writing a historical adventure fiction novel based during that timeframe.
Thank you!
How do I get in contact with you for tips and stuff like that?
Great blog!
Hello JonnyO,

Cheers!

I hope you can go to the 2014 San Francisco History Expo this weekend at the Old Mint!

thanks! hope I can make it next year (or even do a booth!)

Hey –
Elise Hu and I are working on a podcast for Planet Money about the definition of a sandwich and legally what separates a sandwich from a burrito.
New York classifies a burrito as a Sandwich to asses sales taxes. I was curious if you had come across similar regs in San Francisco.
Could I give you a call?
Thanks,
Steve Henn
HI there; couldn’t find your email, so I’m posting here.
I’m crowdfunding GOLDEN CITY, a documentary about how technology is transforming housing and transportation in San Francisco:
http://igg.me/at/goldencity
If you have any questions about me or GOLDEN CITY, please let me know.
http://igg.me/at/goldencity
Thanks!
Hello there!
Is there any way to share some of the events going on at Gray Area Art and Technology Theater? Here is a complete listing. http://grayarea.org/events/

Hi! Will take a look. (And love what you did with the Grand sign!)
would it be possible to shut down comments on the Dolores lagoon article?
Thanks so much!

Hello Burrito Justice, I would like to talk to you for a french tv. Where can I connect you ? thanks, virginie
Can you do maps for a self-publishing project I’m doing? I can pay.
Hi Mr. Justice, I was riding in the SF Bike Party last night and my friend Kevin Flaherty suggested I get in touch with you; he thinks I should be a guest on your radio show some time. I’m primarily a musician but I also happen to know quite a bit of SF history. Let me know what you think.

What is this
Hi! Do you have a monthly newsletter? Wondering if you’ll organize another walk as I found out about today’s walk just now
Hiii Unable to DM on Twitter or would try there.
Sincerely,
Jack
Hi, send me email (I don’t do “social media”)
