Best Bernal Heights Poster?

August 11, 2011
tags: , ,

The LaLeRePoApCo (La Lengua Revolutionary Poster Appreciation Council) are always on the watch for posters of Bernal Heights, the chert-laden massif that looms overhead.

A few recent contenders:

Found inside Liberty Cafe:

(via WBTC – and there should be way more dogs in that lineup!)

This year’s El Rio Big Time Freedom Fest was a good one:

Of course, there is the classic case of the Bernal mural suffering from animal giganticism:

and the Bernal Dispensary mural which is so so.

But let’s face it, you really can never go wrong with Bernal in real life:

Hawaii Timelapse Sunset

August 9, 2011

One shot every 20 seconds over a period of two hours, using iMotion HD on my iPhone + a tripod (thank god).

(One of these days I will do a Sutro sunset from the Bernal massif. That or I will hold up different colored pieces of paper behind milliSutro while drinking beer in my backyard.)

Fog 1, Sutro 0

August 2, 2011

Sutro tried, but a cold, hard fog rolled in soon after.

(Taken by a fog-obsessed friend who I am trying to get on Twitter.)

And a couple more good ones by WBTC.

Last Flight Out

I tried to make a timelapse but the fog was moving so fast it was pointless.

(That’s an airplane on the bottom right.)

And another shot of Bernal looming over the LaLeAuAuReReZo (La Lengua Autonomous Automotive Revolutionary Repair Zone) taken by WBTC.

Burning Sutro

UPDATE: Unfortunately, these are no longer available.

I am lucky to have some pretty awesome readers. And some of them have control of LASERS.

@aidaan, member of the LaLeReLaArCoCo (La Lengua Revolutionary Laser Architectural Construction Council) had the foresight to undergo rigorous training to control LASERS in both the horizontal and vertical directions to create 1/1000th scale Sutro Towers.

Here we see the birthing process. Note the precision use of LASERS.

Behold the Sutrotitos in their dormant state:

Keep an eye out once assembled — an veritable army of them are now running free in the Mission.  (We trapped this specimen using beer and fries at Rosamunde.)

With IPAs and patience, you too can be a Sutro Whisperer.

Shocked By Monkey

August 1, 2011

Just got hooked on MonkeyBrains.

36Mbps down, and HOLY CRAP 23Mbps UP. (Yes, I know Europe and Japan are laughing hysterically.)

See ya, Comcast.

While Monkeybrains is primarily deploying line of site wireless today, they are proposing some novel things to bring fast Internet to your home, like microtrenching fiber under sidewalks (or even running lines through the sewer system!)  This can provide speeds 100 times faster than anything Comcast or AT&T will deliver any time soon, and have the added benefit of not requiring gigantic-ass graffiti magnets utility boxes. (Also, the MonkeyBrains guys are cool and are based in the Mission.)

They need your help though — contact you Supervisor and tell them to make it easier for local ISPs like Monkeybrains to get permits to build fiber networks to the home and provide real competition to Comcast and AT&T.

High Bay

High altitude iPhone zoom lens HDR mosaic experiments.

Here are the originals – no processing, just the iPhone’s HDR:

This one is wonkier but bigger: Berkeley, Oakland, Bay Bridge, Treasure Island, Alcatraz, SF, GGB, Marin Headlands.

You can even see the construction underway for the second span of the Golden Gate Bridge for BART to Marin!

(I know it is shocking to have a post not showing Sutro, but we flew directly over it (shakes fist at sky)).

Precita, Now Part of Greater La Lengua

July 25, 2011

It was only a matter of time before this happened:

20110725-033413.jpg

Incredible 1 of a kind property-designer flat over converted store front-used as architet’s office & artist’s studio. Not just beautiful, flexible & designed with an architect’s flair – but cool as can be, in SF’s newest micro hood-La Lengua! Where Bernal Heights meets the Valencia Corridor & hot Mission district! Gorgeous custom painted Victorian facade deceives the scale, dexterity, & amenities this incredibly flexible 3,100 sq. ft. property has to offer! 115 ft lot affords idyllic back yard & patio to enjoy balmy Mission weather.

The LaLeReReEsCoCo (La Lengua Revolutionary Real Estate Correction Council), in recognition that lower Precita is at best part of the Liminal Zone if not entirely in La Lengua Bernal proper, offers these lovely aerial shots of Bernal and Precita as a tribute payment.

20110725-015347.jpg

20110725-015625.jpg

Though this raises interesting questions – are Precita’s needs being addressed by the cherty Bernal overlords? *Could* Precita break away from Bernal proper? And most importantly, is the Precita playground, with its classic 70s-era metal play equipment a cultural landmark worthy of independence?

Mt Shasta Flyby

July 24, 2011

At least I think it’s Shasta – those Cascades get confusing. (This may take a minute to load.)

Took it via the iPhone + zoom lens from the Space Needle-Sutro Tower gondola (kidding, the flight from YYJ to SFO). Used GIF Factory to make it, which is OK but it really could use a way to adjust / nudge / align images after the fact, and the resolution is meh. Also doesn’t handle saving that well when you don’t have a network connection. iMotion HD (what I used for the Sutro timelapse) has a better interface but only does video.

(Man is it a pain in the ass to upload animated GIFs. Can’t save them in the iPhone’s photo album. Emailed it to tumblr but it only came up as one frame. Such are the digital burdens I bear.)

Anyway, here’s a higher rise shot of our big mountain:

And Mount Baker, at the other end of the Cascades:
