LA Times Jealous of SF Food Cart Revolution
Magic Curry Man. Sexy Soup Cart. Creme Brulee Man. Amuse Bouche. No, these are not budding chefs at Burning Man camps — at least not to my knowledge. Rather, they seem to be leaders of a cutting-edge food movement in San Francisco, serving up budget-priced treats from food carts that liven up forgotten blocks and back alleys in the Mission district. — LA Times Daily Deal Blog (via Sexy Soup Cart)
Forgotten? Uh, sure, if it means the lines don’t get out of control.
Oh, don’t forget that Mission Street Food is going back to their roots (for one night), Sat June 6th, in conjunction with the YBCA Big Idea Night. 3rd & Mission. You need to RSVP with the Yerba Buena Center to get in.
For old time’s sake:
What is it, Lassi?!
“Bark bark!”
“What are you saying, Lassi?! A bunch of alphonso mangos fell into Indian Bento’s blender and made a delicious and tasty drink?”
(Oh, man, wouldn’t these be nice in Dolores Park on a hot Sunday? I’m thinking a bright yellow push cart.)
Also, Indian Bento’s new malaysian-style wraps are also tasty — both chicken and veggie!
La Carta, La Lengua
SFGate reports that the SF Association of Realtors is busy making up exciting neighborhood names such as “Barbary Coast” for the Financial District (an area underwater 150 years ago), while ignoring areas like Dogpatch. (Though at least they finally included Cole Valley.)
The good news is they seem to have gotten most of the Mission right, including both La Lengua and MisHosPo (though Dolores Park is under dispute).
The most interesting bit is you can suggest your own neighborhood name (at the top of the article)! Yes, La Lenguans, this is your hour. I have recently expanded the boundaries of La Lengua (green), invading northward across Cesar Chavez through the Rub’ a Khali to 25th St.. including the oasis (oases?) of Receiver and Anthony’s Cookies.
UPDATE: looks like the poll is closed, but the results are up. La Lengua made it in a couple of times, and there some pretty funny suggestions for the Mission and other parts of the city. “Crazytown.” “Dead Man Walking”. “Bernal Depths.” “Hitt Shoals.”
(Blue is Hipster Valencia, a mallable neighborhood defined purely by bicycles in motion.)
So if you live in the green area between San Jose/Guerrero and Valencia, south of 25th and north of 30th, feel free to join the LLAS (La Lengua Appreciation Society) by adding your cross street to the SF Gate Poll.
Check out more exciting map/hood commentary over on Curbed and SFist.
UPDATE: Via the Curbed comments I discovered The Neighborhood Project‘s map based on Craigslist postings:
I like this map because La Lengua is clearly defined (as part of the Mission) and they use the word “minify” as the opposite of magnify.
Alien Graffiti
Remember our tag of mystery above Bruno’s?
Shitty Kitty discovered that it has a twin!
“I can see another one like it looking from my friends place on 19th, by the corner of Mission. So this is looking south, at the other side of the movie house.”
Alien graffiti? Or Russian graffiti? OR BOTH? Remember our friends from St. Petersburg?
Coincidence? Perhaps not – the St. Luke’s sign CONTAINS CYRILLIC WRITING!!
Welcome, our Russian Alien Overlords! Превед, медведь! Prevyed, medvyed!
Seat of Royalty, Tag of Mystery

Pashmina and friends at Indian Bento now allow you to order online!
Big weekend, 6 bentos available, including my favorite, Garbanzo Curry (on the right).
Mmmm, hot steaming bentos delivered in a yellow mini cooper on a cold foggy night, what more could you ask for?
Shitty Kitty Meetup @Shotwell’s Tonight
First. Ever. Shitty Kitty. Meetup. Tonight. Shotwell’s.
20th and, you guessed it, Shotwell, 6:30.
Bring a randomly shaped piece of paper-like material for added drawing pleasure! More Shitty Kitty drawings here.
Suriya Bye (Elephants Never Forget)
My neighbor Jacob took this very sad photo yesterday:
The owner of the Suriya Thai property must be a bitter, mean old man to paint over a perfectly good picture of an elephant. (Did your elephant ride in Chang Mai go bad somehow? Way to take it out on street art in the hood.) Lucky Brittney did her I Live Here: SF photo shoot when she did:
I am sure de-elephanting a door is a horribly unlucky thing to do in some culture somewhere. I bet Ganesha, Lord of Obstacles is not amused and may be visiting you soon.
Anyway, one less mural in the Mission (even though it was technically commerical art.) Hey, Jesse Hazlip, I know a nice place where you could put a giant elephant-with-guns stencil…
St. Luke’s Update – The Future Is In Your Hands
Tomorrow, Tuesday the 19th of May, at 2PM, there will be a San Francisco Health Commission hearing on St. Luke’s and the CPMC master plan.
Please email the commission and let them know what you think, or better yet attend. (According to the SFHC site I believe the meeting is at 101 Grove, Room 300, but I am not certain.)
Here’s what *I* think:
- The current plan for St. Luke’s is flawed and was taken without enough community input. The neighborhood wants a better St. Luke’s. The CPMC master plan does not make for a better St. Luke’s.
- The neighborhood doesn’t want faceless walls along Cesar Chavez, or the ass-end of the hospital up against the houses on Guerrero, or a dead Valencia Street:
- This city is clearly moving towards livable streets, yet this design seems to ignore that. How does the CPMC plan integrate with the Cesar Chavez Street redesign? Beats me.
- I obviously am in favor of a Valencia Street Park. It would make for a better hospital.
Anyway, attend if you can, or email the commission with your thoughts.
