Suriya Bye (Elephants Never Forget)
May 20, 2009
My neighbor Jacob took this very sad photo yesterday:
The owner of the Suriya Thai property must be a bitter, mean old man to paint over a perfectly good picture of an elephant. (Did your elephant ride in Chang Mai go bad somehow? Way to take it out on street art in the hood.) Lucky Brittney did her I Live Here: SF photo shoot when she did:
I am sure de-elephanting a door is a horribly unlucky thing to do in some culture somewhere. I bet Ganesha, Lord of Obstacles is not amused and may be visiting you soon.
Anyway, one less mural in the Mission (even though it was technically commerical art.) Hey, Jesse Hazlip, I know a nice place where you could put a giant elephant-with-guns stencil…

Oh NO! That is so NOT cool!
I guess I’m glad I got some pics of it, but that white door is probably tagged already now.
Travesty.
A sad day indeed
Com’on guys. Everything can’t always stay the same forever, even if you love it. I’m sure the owner isn’t mean or bitter, but is making a sound business decision to paint the door. Not everyone wants an elephant on their door and I’m sure having a blank canvas increases his chance to rent his building. Let’s see: vacant blight WITH elephant or thriving business WITHOUT elephant. Which to choose??
