Pyroclastic Fog

It seems to be Fog Week here in the San Francisco blogosphere.  Plug1 took this fantastic shot from a plane this weekend of our vapor-ladened friend attacking the bridge:

My meager efforts are limited to ground based fogtography. 280 North, just before 380, taken from my cleverly designed iPhone windshield mount — click the images below for melodramatic cross-faded quicktimes:

When it’s piled up and roiling like that, I can’t help but feel like I’m driving towards Mt. St. Helens.

An old friend of mine (hippy potter — the sweetest people on earth) went up there and gathered gallons of the ash and turned it into glaze for pots. The glaze was generally very shiny, as opposed to matt, and blue-gray with streaks of red and green. Not lovely as glazes go, but memorable.

Here is an example of the glaze (not from my friend).

i spent some time replanting the ridges up past the point where this would have been shot just after the event. it’s amazing the watch the mountain just slump out–i tend to remember the towering cloud. Huge energy. Trees blown off their stumps for 20 miles or more. It has healed remarkably fast.
