One Way Safeway Driveway

Our favorite Safeway gets it right when it comes to the access road from 29th and Tiffany.

Hooray, dedicated pedestrian walkway! One way northbound driveway, so no more access to 29th downhill from the parking lot which will make that intersection less of a clusterfuck.  Great improvents all around — as noted by our friends at da noe valley *buzz* the parking lot was “a labyrinth of death and chaos + pigeons“.

Now if the Mission Safeway could only figure out how to get more than three cashiers during the evening shopping rush hour. Typical lines: looking left towards the deli:

Looking right towards the veggies:

I do like what they’ve done over the past several years, and like the people who work there, but come on guys, throw us a couple more folks from 6 to 9 pm.  Does the Marina Safeway have this issue?  Doubt it.

Here’s hoping this ramp works out! SJ/G was at the table during a 2-year planning process to improve the outside of this Safeway. We asked for this ramp, a car-sharing pod on the San Jose Avenue lot side (to encourage pedestrian activity and to bring a use to this dark place where bad things happen), continuous plantings along the Mission Street side (to make clear where the parking lot ends and pedestrian land begins), narrower driveway openings (to clarify which is sidewalk and which is driveway), a door on San Jose Avenue (you know, for people who live in the neighborhood and walk to Safeway), vines up the San Jose Avenue side, high-quality, pedestrian-friendly fencing (rather than the current cyclone fencing and razor wire), pedestrian-grade lighting and more lighting…stuff like that. Safeway sprung for the ramp. They would be willing to take the discussion up again in ~10 years after they amortize the $3M they spent upgrading the inside of the store.

There is one, and only ONE *perfect* Safeway in San Francisco. It is at 735 7th Ave. If you wish to experience the store, I suggest a conveyance with four wheels and a motor. You won’t be sorry, except that there is such bliss and its not in our neighborhood.

Believe me, the Marina Safeway is WORSE. I kid you not. I’ve been in there before around 6 pm and the lines at every register went way back into the aisles. Horrible.

I bet this Safeway will get better once the Noe Valley Whole Foods opens up.

No way! This Safeway is vastly worse than Diamond Heights, Church/Market, Potrero Center, 4th/King, Fillmore, Marina…If a Safeway employee misbehaves, they get sent here…
