Truncated Sutro

March 18, 2011

Postcard from 1972 via @TransAmericaBld — notice anything different?

(photo via Flickr/Target Man 2000)

Cool cars? Check.
Volkswagen Van? Check.
TransAmerica Pyramid? Check.
Sutro Tower? Wha?

Let’s zoom in a bit.

CSI Image Enhancement (aka playing around with contrast):

Sharpen and clarify!

We’ve seen this before — Sutro’s baby photos!

That last photo is dated August 15, 1972.

Wow, the postcard seems to almost exactly coincide with that last ‘baby photo,’ based on height and that little crane you can barely make out.

That crane is crazy. I initially thought it was one of the horizontal arms being raised up to the top, but it looks like it kept getting lifted up with support wires as Sutro grew.

Now you’ re talking… SF in ’72; Mays in CF, Brodie behind C and the Twin Peaks vistas relatively unspoiled!

Very cool. However, besides one completed Rincon Tower, the skyline hasn’t changed much since then.
