Valencia Art Wall – Let Freedom Ring (But No Bunnies…)
June 15, 2009
A couple of new additions to the VAW this weekend. As usual, click to zoom.
Dance, Dance Revolution:
Let Freedom Ring:
(OK, I get the snakes. But the bunny, WTF? Maybe in Australia, but not exactly the core complaint of the rebellious Americans against their British overlords.)
UPDATE: I don‘t get the snakes.
Of course, there is my current animal-of-mystery issue — something taking a crap in the same location in my backyard each night. Needless to say, I am not amused and am looking for a bird of prey for hire. Rest assured, this mysterious animal will be revealed via infrared night camera, as long time readers will remember from the Tomato Troubles.

I always associated an eagle with a snake in its talons with the Mexican coat of arms, you know, on the flag.
The rabbit is also confusing. What are the allusions? Stupid oblique art.
Hmmm, yeah — I now see a definite conflict with Sam the American Eagle taking out the slithering ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ New England serpent. (Hey, I bet you it’s about gay marriage!)
Via that wikipedia link, it looks like the Mexican flag has its own set of contradictions — the Aztec codicies never showed the eagle (the Aztec sun god) taking out the snake (the earth god and/or Quetzalcoatl). It’s all due to a mistranslation – “the snake hisses” got mistranslated from Nahuatl as “the snake is torn.” (Thanks, Spanish priests!)
Now I’m really confused. Thanks, art!
