Brought to you by Rich Rosen (Chenery Park, Boulevard), a Queens transplant who’s always lamented the lack of real New York–style pie in SF, Pi will deliver a taste of Long Island moxie, done up SF–style. Which means you’ll find no-nonsense pizzas in 15-inch or 21, as well as pizza by the slice (preferably held taco–style with three fingers while standing)—made with whatever standard toppings (not fennel fronds or roasted garlic) you want.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a San Francisco restaurant without using fresh, local ingredients. And, you’ll appreciate the other thing they’re keeping local (with some select Belgians thrown in the mix): the booze. Look for 12 craft brews on tap—with only Anchor Liberty Ale and Blind Pig IPA staying in rotation—that are mostly one-offs like the Sierra Nevada Trippel, as well as more than 30 by the bottle. And if you want to study up, they’ve put together a beer bible with insider stories on each beer in house.

There will also be a nightly happy hour—”Pi R Squared”—that’ll be a slice and pint for $6.28.

I look forward to watching those lacking east coast pizza experience learn to eat a pizza with one hand.

More photos on Flickr by xbleh (including the one above, apparently), and Adam at MenuPages has links to the permits.

I still think San Francisco is much more in need of a Canadian pizza fix.

Canada does many things well. Pizza is not one of them. (Sushi, on the other hand… They practically throw it at you on street corners.)

Do you have to fold it? I hate how my fellow New Yorkers fold their pizza before eating it (but also appreciate that they don’t have a single good burrito there, and are probably trying to compensate).

Folding is definitely inappropriate. I recommend curling your pizza into a self-supporting U-shape – cheese should not meet cheese.

Cutting it with a knife and fork is not good either. And don’t stare directly at the pizza. Do not taunt or tease your pizza, or expose to direct sunlight.

Dear god I detest that place. Boston Pizza = all that is wrong with pizza in Canada.

I actually ate there last night, must have stumbled in on some pre-opening thing because everybody else seemed to know the owner. They seemed happy to serve me a couple of IPAs and a slice though. It’s definitely a bar at least as much as a pizza place, nice and casual and didn’t feel super trendy. Everyone asked me if I lived in the neighborhood so I assume they want to be a real La Lengua spot and not necessarily feed the buzz. I really hope it works out that way, for entirely selfish reasons.

    Alicia, I am ridiculously jealous.

I am thrilled they are focusing on the casual bar aspect. I want nothing more than a place where I can pop in an have a slice and a beer without having to deal with an hour and a half wait.

Pitchers or no Pitchers? Since it’s not mentioned I’m assuming no Pitchers, which would be very sad panda.
