I was surprised to see the Golden Gate Bridge sneaking in beside the big hill by Candlestick / Bayview Park (does it have a name)?

That’s the north tower, and those are the streets of the south side of Bernal immediately below it.  (The red part of Bernal merges into Candlestick hill. The north tower is blocked by Corona Heights, but I think you can just make out the tippy top of it.)

I was shocked — no, SHOCKED — that I could easily see Sutro with the naked eye from San Jose / Alviso.

Hi Sutro!

As the bird flies, Sutro is 36 miles away in the picture.

Here’s what downtown SF looks like:

The Transamerica Building and One Rincon are pretty easy to make out in the right third of the photo. If you go to the left you can see the Bank of America building.  I’ll be damned if I can figure out the other buildings.

The perspective is (to me) somewhat surprising — I’ve never quite wrapped my head around the fact that San Francisco is northwest of San Jose, not north. (280 North, my ass.) It’s really quite an angle as you can see from these sight lines I drew in Google Earth (The blue line is to Transamerica, green is Bank of America, red is, of course, Sutro.

Rotating the map, you get a better idea of the perspective in the panorama:

Of course, the first question one asks is “where am I?” (Insert Descartian existence joke here.)

Utilizing the power of BURRITOVISION combined with the gridding mechanism popularly known as BRADVERTIZIFICATION, we chop up the map in units equal to the distance between B of A and Transamerica.

Through a bunch of clicking that I won’t bore you with, we turn SF into a bunch of wedges (fortunately less than 26 as I was almost out of letters):

Unfortunately my camera isn’t that great and while visibility was good, contrast of SF hills against the Marin headlands was sub-optimal unlike the view from the Farallons.  Bernal should be in wedges E and F, and while there’s a hill there I really can’t pick anything out distinctive (unlike the view from Mt. Diablo.)

She has also realized that by yelling “Go Giants Go” she can get lots of people around her to do the same. (She does throw in an occasional “Go Canucks Go” for good measure.)

Anyway, some fun with the new iPhoto zoom lens and panorama software (AutoStitch). Click images to zoom in for 10,000 pixels of sunny baseball — managed to capture some remarkable detail.

Interesting fringing – the lens is pretty good, but a little chromatic aberration brought on by way the iPhone camera scans and my wobbly hands. Also some unintentionally creative ghosting of the pitcher, batter and shortshop (just think of it as a field of dreams kind of thing).

Here’s the uncropped original, btw — proof that I can’t hold an iPhone steady with a zoom lens while also wrangling a 2.83 year old.

Anyway, thank god for those slides under the giant coke bottle. Looks like we’ll be sitting in the bleachers for a couple of years.

Once again, thanks to our agent on the Farallons, Sara Lee Chandler, Scientist Emeritus of the world-renowned BJIFPS (Burrito Justice Institute of Farallonic and Panoramic Sciences) who sent in follow-on photos to our original Farallonoramic effort.

I have not had time to go through and label this one, so I have decided to crowdsource –  I have added a numbered index to this panorama, going from 1 (left) to 400 (right).  Use this as a point of reference for discussions.

We’ve labeled these map wedges onto the original pano.  N1, N2 are north of the Farallon “equator”, and S1, S2 are south. (Feel free to reference “Sector N12, 204″ if such granularity suits you.)

We go all the way from N39 to S19! 58 degrees or Farallonization! Bolinas Bay to Pedro Point!
