Putting on my Plug1 hat for a moment:

iPhone Panorama of the Bay Bridge to Alcatraz, with the Ferry Building in front.

Click the image to zoom all 4500 pixels, or view the same in my patent-pending SquishVision. Revel in all 450×450 pixels of awkward fake fisheye lensing.

I was in Hawaii last week. Very nice, but ridiculously humid.  The fan was my friend.

Lots of palm trees.

I rather enjoyed drinking kona coffee and/or Mehano Volcano Red Ale underneath these palms, or in a chair where the ocean stopped the lava.

But I wouldn’t want to be around during an eruption — the vastness of lava fields are sobering.

And these USGS timelapse videos are nuts. Yet people build subdivisions right next to the calderas.  WTF? (Click to play)

If you’re between the volcano and the sea, you just pack up your things and get out the way.

Amber Oakleys make a decent iPhone filter, but they do not encourage steady holding of iPhones while making animated GIFs of our friend the ocean.

I do like how I caught the rays of the sun — click on the animated GIF to get the individual frames in something higher than 8-bit color.

Morning Mission

August 21, 2009

Mission at Valencia, 7 am, street cleaning day. Ghostly.  More runners than cars in the heart of La Lengua.

Looks more like the back streets of Paris or London this way.

Tall Tree, Short Creek

I thought I would surprise you all by including a non-fog related picture – Henry Cowell State Park near Santa Cruz.

Ahoy, Sailor Jerry

July 1, 2009

Nicely hand-painted ad/mural went up on 29th and Mission (by the 3300 Club and the loading dock for Cole Hardware), replacing the previous Dewars hand painted ad.

I am unfamiliar with Sailor Jerry — I somehow doubt she is one of Barrett’s Privateers (the best drinking song EVER, rum or not.)

And I have no idea how that bikini is staying on.

Anyway, click to zoom the top image for the full panorama.

(Wait, is that actually Sailor Jerry on the left?  Or is this beverage intended for an unpictured Sailor Jerry?)

I have discovered that Panorama on the iPhone can do rather nice renderings of flat surfaces like walls, etc — I scooted down the sidewalk from one end of the mural to the other, taking about 8 shots to make this one. (For anything with depth, rotating from a single point is required unless you want the multiheaded disembodied syndrome. Damned parallax…)

Warmer in Victoria than in SF right now — this fact is deserving of a towering beer.

Sunset + Yard + Grill-orama

April 21, 2009

It is the perfect temperature outside right now.

360 spiral-orama via the iPhone — click to zoom 20x for 8409 pixels of perspective warping confusion. Note that the satellite dish on the left is immediately above my grill on the right.

(Correct me if my math is off, but if you printed this out, at 72 DPI I think it would be over 9 feet wide.)

BTW, I highly recommend grilling your asparagus while drinking a Big Daddy and watching hockey via Slingbox.

Marcha De Las Letras – The Other 24th Street

April 2, 2009

I’d like to buy a vowel:

taqueria vallarta

(Perhaps a perverse multi-array version of hangman? Or a horribly flawed implementation of a postscript stack. I do love the “TV” in the rounded rectangle at the top.)

Current Senate seating chart. Democrats on the left, Republicans on the right.

Dolores Park Breaks 70, We Break 360

March 28, 2009

I love this city.  It breaks 60 and we all act like it’s 80.

10,000 pixels wide 360 (actually more like 380), click to zoom.

Ganja treats man and the ice cream man are battling it out on the left hand side.  This while 7 cops arrested some dude, reasons unknown.  They walked right by GTM as they left the park.

(Panorama on the iPhone seems to get horribly confused by trees.)

More Mother Mother

March 27, 2009

Mother Mother put on a freakin’ amazing opening act at Cafe du Nord last night. I was enjoying the show too much to take pictures. Flickr to the rescue, these from a Philly show two weeks back taken by GETrevolution.

I believe Ryan’s Queen-like falsetto is tightly correlated to his hair. That’s just the way things are done on the islands in the Straight of Georgia.

Seriously though, check out their two albums.  Looks like new one next year sometime.  Here’s to hoping they return before that, and are the main act next time they play Cafe Du Nord. I want MMM (More Mother Mother).

Sam Roberts was good, but let’s face it, he’s no Mother Mother.  Good lighting meant I got to play around with Panorama and QuadCamera.

Sam moves around stage a lot.

The timing worked out perfectly on this QuadCamera shot.
