4-D Fog

September 21, 2010

In this summer of odd fog, Seismogenic brings us this dramatic picture:

If you couldn’t guess, it’s the Golden Gate Bridge solidly encased in what I can only assume is a Vonnegutian Fog-9.

Since 3-D objects have 2-D shadows, 4-D objects would have 3-D shadows, no? Or perhaps this fog is a 4-D version of the bridge viewed through past, present and future. Can’t quite tell as this is making my head hurt – someone get me a chronodimensionologist.

Reminds me of this Sutro fog shot on Wikipedia:

Or this fog-sunset combo by craigiest:

Speaking of time and fog, we now have not just one but two epic foglapses (via Laughing Squid and Spots Unknown, respectively):

Of SF fog pictures, I will never tire. Thanks.

Thanks so much for blogging my photo! I am still utterly weirded out by the light (in a good way) – your fog-leeching-from-time-space-continuum explanation makes as much sense as anything else!
    *cue ominous music*

Also, both of those Sutro pictures are pretty crazy! That first one makes it seem like Sutro’s actually teaming up with the fog for all of its attack plans. (Though if Sutro thinks the fog is going to make it stealthier, that would appear to be wrong…)

We do have evidence of the fog attacking and eating Sutro.

I do believe, however, that Herb Caen was wrong — if the Golden Gate Bridge is ever attacked, our ever vigilant Sutro will be the first one there to defend it (followed closely by the Bernal antenna).

      Oh, of course!

But perhaps, when Sutro first arrived, it attempted to attack the GGB to declare superiority and got promptly dispatched, at which point it realized that its true place was in defending the City, not antagonizing other landmarks. It and GGB are probably an epic crimefighting team now, with the Bernal Antenna as a trusty sidekick. YES.

…I probably need to draw a comic of that now. I probably also need to sleep, if I’m making stuff like that up.

I was always jealous of the first person who looked up at the moon and realized it was a reflection of some other light, probably the sun; we never get to make this discovery on our own because we grow up with it. But somehow we do all get to independently discover that we are like fish at the bottom of an ocean of air, or sometimes in SF at the bottom of an ocean of water.

BTW does anyone have an italian or latin source for the quote from Evangelista Torricelli, barometer inventor, translated on Wikipedia as: “We live submerged at the bottom of an ocean of air.”?
